8 Iconic Musicians from the 90s Who Have Soared High in Their Career

Reality bites! The rockers many of us grew up with are not so young anymore. And, yes, some look pretty scary. But then there are a few who actually have aged damn well. And, come on, they all still have spirit, even if they don’t smell like it.

Check out the following stars who have indeed aged, some admittedly better than others and might even have a dark past. But oh, they all have made a name in the industry and would leave a legacy that would be cherished forever.

1. Steven Tyler (Aerosmith)

In 1970, Tyler first formed the famous rock band Aerosmith, yet the band enjoyed its massive peak of success mostly during the 90s. Who can forget the video clips which introduced the world to Alicia Silverstone and Liv Tyler, Steven’s gorgeous daughter? Clearly, time (and drugs) have taken its toll on this legendary rocker who now looks anything but “amazing”.

2. Axl Rose (Guns N’ Roses)

The frontman of Guns N’ Roses, Axl became largely a recluse in the early 90s. A diagnosed manic-depressive, Axl has stated that he was sexually abused by his dad as young as two years old. He also spent most of his younger years in trouble with the law. Whereas he seemed rather normal when younger, he then appeared medicated and hoped not disturbed. The jungle was not so welcoming after all.

3. Courtney Love

Probably most famous as the wife of the late and great Kurt Cobain, Courtney grew up on a commune, spent time in reform school, and became a stripper at age 16. Wow, just wow! Having formed the band “Hole” in 1989, the group has failed to bring back its 90s success in the 2000s.

Courtney was then reported to suffer a few years of self-inflicted wounds both physically and emotionally perpetrated. Aside from her numerous releases with Hole, Love has released one solo studio album and two singles. Courtney played the role of Empire Record’s biggest star “Elle Dallas”, a hard rock or soul diva who is determined to make a comeback. Both tracks were received well by the fans and press alike.

4. Alanis Morissette

Alternative pop and rock singer Alanis Morissette rose to prominence with her angry lyrics and essentially wrote the soundtrack to many teens’ lives in the 90s. Her album “Jagged Little Pill” produced tracks like “Ironic” and “You Oughta Know” that are still just as well known today as they were in the ’90s. Since then, the singer released a series of albums with varying levels of success. Alanis doesn’t seem to care too much since she has turned to choose a more spiritual path nowadays.

5. James Hetfield (Metallica)

James’ teenage years may be over, but Metallica’s lead vocalist is still one happy guy. Eight Grammy Awards later, the group had a hit album as recently as 2008 and has continued to make some studio release from then on. Married with three children, this rocker has a lot to be happy about. And we’re pretty sure he is thrilled current fashion allowed him to lose the hairdo.

6. Lauren Hill

The Fugees leading lady hit it big with her solo album “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” in the late 90s. The single “Doo Wop (That Thing)” got a huge amount of radio play and debuted at number one on the Billboard music charts. It remains her only studio album still, and when the songstress released an MTV Unplugged record later it only achieved moderate success. Hill was incarcerated for about three months in 2013 for tax evasion.

7. Sting (The Police)

Gordon Sumner. Yep, that’s this handsome guy’s name. Talking about aging well, aside from being the now-legendary Sting and frontman of The Police, Gordon has also become a teacher, actor, Ashtanga Yoga practitioner, and philanthropist. He is best known nowadays for his work on environmentalism and human rights. You really can do a lot of things aside from the usual things you and other people think you can merely do.

8. Jon Bon Jovi (Bon Jovi)

For many, Bon Jovi was the ultimate rock band. And its lead singer, Jon Bon Jovi, was the ultimate rocker heartthrob. Oddly, Jon has grown up in a similarly ideal fashion. Having acted in a string of TV shows and feature films, Jon also co-founded a soccer team (Arena Football League’s Philadelphia Soul) and settled down to have kids. In 2005, Jon gave $1,000,000 to Oprah Winfrey’s Angel Network. Maybe not a teen anymore, but definitely super cool and still very handsome.
